So How Does That Make You Feel?

Feelings, nothing more than feelings… so went the lyrics of the one-hit wonder written by Louis Gasté and recorded by Morris Albert in 1974. A huge hit at the time, the song went on to gain a reputation as the ultimate example of cheesy, banal 1970’s soft rock.

But the opening words of that song heralded a new era that was to develop in popular entertainment over the next four decades, an era of insipid sentimentalism that I believe has undermined society’s sense of reason and our ability to discern fact from fantasy. For many of us, our daily reality is indeed, nothing more than feelings.

One can trace the growth of the feelings phenomenon over time with TV shows such as Little House on the Prairie and Highway to Heaven. The closing scene of most episodes would involve a smiling Michael Landon choking back tears of joy at the sentimental, tear-jerky outcome of whatever illness-of-the-week /cute little girl / puppy / love-conquers-all drippy angel-on-probation plot that brought audiences back week after week.

cute puppy

Since those early days, the entertainment industry has turned sentimentalism into a booming reality-show goldmine. Tears sell, whether its the talent show judge overcome with emotion by the awesomeness of a new singing / dancing / ventriloquist sensation, the angry, foul-mouthed master chef reduced to tears by a tasty culinary creation, or the tough-guy home renovation contractor with a lump in his throat because he built something wonderful for the deserving family with the terminally sick child.

Its relentless.

Now the sentimental, feel-the-love LGBTQ, same-sex marriage circus dominates our feelings. Never before have we been so manipulated by our vulnerability to emotion. But if you play the right music, add an imploring narrative that invokes just the right feelings, you can convince anyone of anything. Manipulative tactics also include ubiquitous social media memes that combine cute / sad / provocative images with witty half-truths and a handy like-button. These are designed to invoke viral sentimentalism in support of or against a cause or position. Often in favor of liberal “progressive” positions or against faith and tradition.

As Christians, we need to be alert. This is especially true if you or your children spend time glued to a screen. People are using our feelings to bring us onside with their point of view, if only for a moment, so as to add legitimacy to their agenda. Be very careful with that like-button.

So let’s consider how we really feel.

Science and popular opinion tells us that there is no God. That means we live in a pointless universe and our lives have no purpose. Your love for your child or spouse is merely a chemical reaction in your head. There is no standard of absolute morality so the ISIS thugs have just as much right to advance their doctrine as I do to write this blog. And when you’re dead, you’re just dead. Dead and gone.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (the CDC), there were 219 children killed in the womb for every 1000 live births in the USA in 2011. That means that over 17% of new Americans were murdered in 2011. Just imagine what the number is on a global scale.

The Bible tells us that God is love (1 John 4:8)

Regardless of what’s going on in this fallen world, if we believe and put our trust in Him, He will guide our paths and bring us home into His presence at the end of our earthly journey. Through His work on the cross, Jesus Christ allows us to establish a relationship with Him. A relationship free of guilt or fear. One of pure love.

God Bless.
